BA-Devices is the wireless network set aside for Faculty and Students to be able to connect smart devices, Internet-of-Things devices, game consoles, and other networkable devices to wireless and the internet, when those devices can't connect to BA-Access (usually because they won't let you enter a username as well as a password when authenticating to the network). If a user has registered a device with ITD and has trouble getting it connected and operating on the network, they can try these following troubleshooting steps:

  • Is the device a Smartphone, Tablet (iPad or Android) or Computer (MacOS, Windows, or Linux)?Smartphones and computers -- desktop or laptop -- must be connected to BA-Access. They cannot be used on BA-Devices.
    • Try connecting to BA-Access instead. Make sure to use your Student, Faculty, Staff, or Family number (STU0000, FAC0000, STA0000, FAM0000) as the username and your 10+ character wireless password, and make sure you accept and trust any certificate that's offered.
    • If you are using an Android smartphone, you may need to add some additional parameters to your wireless settings before it will connect to BA-Access. The article "ANDROID: I can't connect my Android Smartphone/Tablet to BA-Access" may be able to help you. If not, contact the Help Desk at helpdesk@brewsteracademy.org, call 603-569-7000, or come down to the IT Office and we'll assist you further.
  • Is the device failing to join the network: If you're trying to join BA-Devices but it's either reporting back a failure to connect, automatically disconnecting, or jumping to a different network like BA-Guest, try the following steps:
    • Make certain you're selecting BA-Devices.
    • Verify your password: the password for BA-Devices is 'bobcat15' -- all lowercase, without the quotes. Make certain that's the password you're entering.
    • If you're using your smartphone to configure a smart device (usually with an app), make certain the smartphone is on BA-Access -- it will not be able to connect to BA-Devices and will fail to configure the smart device.
    • If you're configuring a Google or Google Nest device, make certain you've logged into your proper Google account on your smartphone. This generally will be a personal account -- Brewster doesn't recommend ever using your Brewster GMail account to register or configure personal devices.
    • If you still can't join BA-Devices, please bring the device to the IT office so we can assist you further.
  • Is the device joining BA-Devices, but then not accessing the internet or properly functioning? If you're able to connect to BA-Devices but then the unit doesn't perform as expected, please try the following steps:
    • Check the device's IP address -- it should automatically receive an address when it connects to our network.
      • If the IP address is in the 169.254.xxx.xxx range or else claims to be a "self-assigned" IP address, then the device isn't receiving an IP number from the network. Restart your device, forget the BA-Devices network, and re-connect. If it continues to receive a 169.254.xxx.xxx number, please contact the helpdesk at helpdesk@brewsteracademy.org, 603-569-7000, or bring the device down to the IT Office and we'll assist you further.
      • If the IP address is in the 192.168.50.xxx or 192.168.51.xxx range, the device is properly joining BA-Devices, but the network doesn't recognize the device. Make certain you've registered the device with the IT Office (including getting Advisor approval if you're a student in Grades 9, 10, or 11). If the device is newly registered, power the device off entirely for a half hour then try again. Otherwise, please contact the IT office so we can assist you further.
      • If the IP address is blank, there is an issue with your device's wireless network adaptor or interface -- the issue may be in your device (including a potential hardware failure) or on the network side. In either case, please contact the IT office so we can assist you further.
      • If the device is joining BA-Devices and has an IP in the 192.168.xxx.xxx (but not 192.168.50.xxx or 192.168.51.xxx) but it's not working the way you expect -- especially if you expect to connect to it, stream to it, or interact with it on your smartphone or computer -- then contact the IT Office and describe the issue -- we will probably need to adjust the Airplay settings for your device or something similar.
  • The Game Console (or other device) is connecting to BA-Devices and works for most things, but multiplayer games (or other off-campus features) won't connect or the device says it uses 'UPnP' but it's failing:
    • The major game consoles (XBox One, Playstation 4, and especially the Nintendo Switch) and several Internet of Things devices use a protocol called UPnP (for Universal Plug and Play) to automatically configure home Wifi routers, Cable Modems, or similar devices to allow multiplayer play or activate certain features. Universal Plug-and-Play (UPnP) does not work on Campus or Enterprise Level Wireless Networks like oursUnfortunately, this is a known issue which needs to be addressed by the device manufacturers or game developers -- we have no workaround or fix we can apply. Single player games and some multiplayer games that don't use UPnP will still work, and you should still be able to connect to XBox Live, Playstation Network, or Nintendo Online to get patches and updates, download newly purchased games, etc., but UPnP-based games or features are not supported by and will not work on our network. We apologize for the inconvenience.
    • If the device needs to interact with your smartphone or computer to work, we may need to adjust the device's Airplay settings. Please contact the helpdesk at helpdesk@brewsteracademy.org, 603-569-7000, or bring the device down to the IT Office and we'll assist you further.

As a reminder -- personal devices must be registered with the IT office before they can be used on our network. The use of personal devices on the campus network is extended as a courtesy but we cannot guarantee any specific device will or not work on our network. Consult the Acceptable Use Police in the Student and Faculty Handbooks if you have any questions.
